Montenegro is the size of Connecticut, and yet the drives take twice as long as you expect. A honest one-week loop is doable, memorable and not exhausting — if you resist the temptation to add one more town. This is the itinerary we recommend to friends.
The route in one line
Podgorica airport → Kotor Bay → Durmitor → Podgorica → Skadar Lake → Bar/Ulcinj coast → back.
Day 1: Podgorica airport → Kotor
2-hour drive via Cetinje (scenic) or the coast (faster). Aim for Perast for a late lunch, then into Kotor for the evening. Walk the city walls at sunset — before the cruise ships wake up next morning.
Day 2: Kotor Bay
Boat to Our Lady of the Rocks, morning swim at Rose or Žanjic, seafood lunch in Perast. Evening in Kotor's old town.
Day 3: Kotor → Durmitor
3.5-hour drive north through Nikšić. Big country. Overnight in Žabljak.
Day 4: Durmitor
Black Lake walk (2 hours), Tara Canyon viewpoint, drive over Sedlo pass if the weather holds. This is Montenegro's alpine face and it's underrated.
Day 5: Durmitor → Skadar Lake
4-hour drive south via Podgorica to Virpazar. Wine tasting on the way in. Overnight near the lake.

Day 6: Skadar Lake
Morning private boat tour (this is the day you'll remember). Late lunch, afternoon at Besac Fortress or a wine cellar. Sunset from Pavlova Strana viewpoint.
Day 7: Skadar Lake → coast → airport
Drive over to Bar for the old olive tree and ruins, swim at a quiet coast beach in the afternoon, back to Podgorica airport by evening. Or spend one more night on the coast if your flight is next morning.
Driving notes
- Roads are generally good but slow — 60 km takes 90 minutes routinely
- The Sozina tunnel (Bar–Podgorica) is worth the €3.50 toll
- Fuel is cheaper than western Europe; card accepted at highway stations
- Winter (Dec–Feb): Durmitor pass often closed; take the longer route
If you have 10 days
Add Ostrog Monastery on the Durmitor day, spend two nights on the coast, and add a second Skadar Lake day (kayak morning, boat afternoon).
