About Skadar Lake Guide
We started this guide in 2019 because the internet's coverage of Skadar Lake was — and mostly still is — a mix of coach-tour marketing, misplaced pins and stock photos of Croatian coastlines relabelled as Montenegro. There was no honest, useful resource written by the people who live here. So we made one.
Who writes here
Every article on this site is written or edited by a resident of the Skadar Lake region — Virpazar, Rijeka Crnojevića, or the Crmnica hills. Between the small editorial team we have about thirty years on the water: skippers, wine growers, guest-house owners, birders and one former park ranger. When we describe a swim beach on the southern shore, we've swum there. When we recommend a konoba, we ate there last week.
What we don't do
- We don't take press trips, junkets or discounted "familiarisation" tours.
- We don't publish generic AI-generated travel copy. Ever.
- We don't recommend businesses we haven't personally used across at least two seasons.
- We don't stock-photo. Every image is from the lake itself.
How we make money
Some of the operators we recommend send us a small referral fee when readers book through our links. We only add these links after we've already been recommending the operator to friends for at least a year — the money follows the recommendation, not the other way around. We have never rewritten a review because of a referral relationship, and we have removed operators when their standards slipped.
Corrections
If you spot something out of date, please tell us. We update prices and openings every spring and autumn, but the lake changes and we don't catch everything. Write to hello@skadarlakeguide.example.
