Skadar Lake is one of the most important bird habitats in Europe. Around 270 species have been recorded here, and the star — the Dalmatian pelican — has one of the last stable colonies on the continent. Serious birders come specifically for this lake, and casual visitors regularly go home with photographs they didn't expect.

- Great cormorant, pygmy cormorant — everywhere, every day
- Grey heron, purple heron — reed beds, dawn and dusk
- Little egret, great white egret — shallows, all season
- Glossy ibis — reed edges, mainly summer
- Dalmatian pelican — northern arm, active feeding at dawn
- White-tailed eagle — resident, rarer sightings
- Ferruginous duck, whiskered tern, various warblers
The best months
Late April through mid-June and again in September. Migration windows add species you won't see in high summer. July and August are hot and quiet — the birds are still there but activity drops.
Best time of day
First light, no exceptions. Depart the pier by 07:00 in June, 07:30 in September. By 09:30 the wind picks up and the birds retreat.
The best boat for birding
Small, private, ideally an operator who understands you want silence and slow. Wooden boats are wonderful for close approaches; sport boats are better if you also want to reach the northern arm where the pelican colonies feed.

- Binoculars: 8×42 is ideal; 10× is too shaky on a boat
- Long lens: 300mm minimum, 500mm ideal

Bird ethics on the lake
Reputable operators will not approach pelican rafts closer than 50m and will cut the engine well before. If your skipper doesn't do this, ask them to — and consider a different operator next time.
