The single most useful decision to make before booking a Skadar Lake boat tour: wooden or sport. Both are legitimate, both are enjoyable, and they deliver different days on the water.

The boats themselves

Wooden boats on Skadar Lake are hand-built by a handful of families. They're heavy, slow, low-slung, and designed for lake work — fishing, transport between villages. Modern sport boats are aluminium or fibreglass, use quiet outboards, and can cover the lake at 35–40 km/h.

Range and coverage

Wooden boats do 15–20 km comfortably in a half-day. Sport boats do 40–60 km in the same time. That's the difference between the local bays and the entire lake.

Noise and atmosphere

Wooden boats are quieter, both engine and hull. On a still morning you'll hear frogs, egrets, water lilies opening. Sport boats are noisier under way — but a competent skipper cuts the engine at the same stops.

Weather resilience

Sport boats handle wind and chop far better. If your visit falls in July or August afternoons, a sport boat lets you keep going when a wooden boat would head back.

Price

A 3-hour private wooden boat runs €120–160. A 3-hour private sport boat runs €160–220. For a full day, sport boats cost more (€280–450) because they cover more.

For the traditional half-day option, book a hand-built wooden boat tour.

For the full-lake experience, book the Virpazar's private full-lake tour.

Our recommendation

First-time visitors with half a day: wooden. First-time visitors with a full day and only one shot: private sport boat. Returning visitors: whichever you didn't do last time.
