Skadar Lake was, from the 14th to 16th centuries, the spiritual heart of medieval Zeta — the state that preceded Montenegro. A handful of monasteries survive, several of them on islands, and visiting them is the deepest layer of context this landscape offers.
Kom Monastery — the easiest
On a small peninsula in the northern arm of the lake, Kom is reachable by every standard boat tour from Virpazar. Founded in the early 15th century, restored several times. A monk usually welcomes visitors; small donation appreciated. Allow 30 minutes.
Beška Monastery — the island jewel
On its own island in the middle of the lake. Two churches, one from 1440. To reach it you need a longer boat tour — a standard 3-hour group tour won't get there. A private full-day tour will.
Moračnik Monastery — the quiet one
Also on its own island, less visited than Beška, arguably more atmospheric. A single restored church and a small hermitage. Best combined with Beška on a full-day private tour.
Starčevo Monastery — the far south
The most remote of the island monasteries. Reachable only by longer private tour, and only when the water is calm. If you get there, you'll likely have it entirely to yourself.

Visiting etiquette
- Shoulders and knees covered; women are given a wrap at the door if needed
- Speak quietly, no flash photography inside the churches
- Small donation (€2–5) if there is a monk or nun present
- Do not photograph the resident monks without asking
A very short history
The lake was the safest zone in medieval Zeta, protected by water and mountains from both Ottoman advances and Venetian raids. Monasteries flourished under Balša and Crnojević patronage between 1360 and 1490, before Ottoman consolidation. Almost every one you can visit today has been restored more than once.
