Skadar Lake is a genuinely good day out with children — but the format matters. Long, hot afternoons on a fast boat wear kids down. Short, slow mornings with wildlife spotting are the opposite: they turn into one of the best memories of the trip.
The best format for families
A morning wooden boat tour from Virpazar or Poseljani. Slow enough to spot herons, quiet enough for a picnic, short enough not to test attention. Most skippers happily cut the route short if the kids have had enough.

By age
- Under 4: skip the boat. Do a short walk to Besac Fortress and lunch in Virpazar instead.
- 4–7: 2-hour wooden boat, morning only, no swim requirement.
- 8–12: 3–4 hour wooden or slow sport boat with a swim stop. This is the sweet spot.
- Teens: private sport boat with hidden beaches and swimming. They'll love the speed.
What to bring for children
- Sunscreen applied before you leave (reapplying on a wobbling boat is a nightmare)
- Two hats per child (they blow off)
- Snacks for every hour
- Waterproof pouch for phones
- A small notebook for a bird-spotting game — surprisingly popular
Safety notes from local skippers
Every reputable operator carries child life jackets in every size — but confirm ahead. Boats have low sides; toddlers need constant supervision. If wind picks up above ~15 knots, tours are usually postponed.
When to go with children
Late May, June and early September. Water is warm enough to swim, temperatures are pleasant, and afternoon storms are rarer than in July / August.
